Moon Days

Both full and new moon days are observed as rest days in the Ashtanga tradition.

Both the sun and moon exert a gravitational pull on the earth and create different energetic experiences for us. The full moon makes us feel energetic and emotional, but not well grounded. When the moon is full we tend to be more headstrong.

The new moon makes us feel calm and grounded, but dense and declined towards physical exertion.

Practicing Ashtanga yoga makes us feel more attuned to the natural cycles of life. Observing moon days is one way to recognise and honour the rhythms of nature so we can live in greater harmony with it.

On moon days we practice a revised version of the Ashtanga sequence devised to work with the body’s energy levels.
